CALLING ALL LADY PARADISE MEMBERS! TEMPLE TERRACE LADY'S INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

Temple Terrace General Manger Marcy Bork and her team are hosting a Women's Only golf event being hosted by the clubs' Women's Golf Association. The event is scheduled for Saturday morning October 17 with an 830am shotgun start. Cost for the event $100. For more details, call Pat Heid at 813-785-5801 . The golf course is in great shape and will be a great event, knowing Marcy like I do!

As Paradise Golfers, we’re fortunate to play some of the best courses in the Tampa area. With that privilege comes the responsibility of helping take care of them.

After playing the fabulous Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort, I had three different members mention that some of our golfers were not raking bunkers after playing from them. While the vast majority of our members do a great job taking care of the courses, a few simple reminders are always helpful:

• Rake the bunkers: Before teeing off, check whether there is a rake on the back of your cart. If there isn’t, please do your best to find one and rake your footprints and any other areas you disturb
• Fill your divots: If your cart has a sand bucket, make sure it has sand in it. If it doesn’t, let the staff know so it can be filled. Please use it to fill the divots you make throughout the round.
• Fix your pitch marks: Always repair your pitch mark on the green—and if you see another one that needs attention, please fix that one too.
• Keep up with the group ahead: Do your best to maintain a good pace of play and stay with the group in front of you. This is the easiest way to keep your round moving along.

The way I see it, I always do these things because I know what happens when I don’t! My ball ends up in someone’s footprint in a bunker, my shot lands in a divot, or my putt hits an unrepaired pitch mark—and somehow it all happens during a five-hour round! UGH!

Let’s all do our part to leave the courses in great shape for the golfers who play behind us—and help maintain the great relationships Paradise Golf has with our participating courses.

The modern consensus from the USGA and PGA of America is to base tee selection on driver distance (carry + roll) rather than handicap.

THE 28X FORMULA

Take your average, consistent driver distance—not your once-in-a-lifetime hit—and multiply it by 28 to determine your ideal total course yardage.

AVERAGE DRIVER DISTANCE × 28 = TARGET COURSE LENGTH

• 200 yards × 28 = 5,600 yards
• 225 yards × 28 = 6,300 yards
• 250 yards × 28 = 7,000 yards
• 275 yards × 28 = 7,700 yards

YARDAGE RECOMMENDATIONS BY AVERAGE DRIVE

🏌️ 300+ YARDS → 7,100+ YARDS
Short irons & wedges into par 4s

🏌️ 275 YARDS → 6,700–7,000 YARDS
Mid to short irons

🏌️ 250 YARDS → 6,200–6,500 YARDS
Mid irons

🏌️ 225 YARDS → 5,800–6,100 YARDS
Mid to long irons

🏌️ 200 YARDS → 5,200–5,600 YARDS
Long irons & hybrids

🏌️ 175 YARDS → 4,400–4,800 YARDS
Hybrids & fairway woods

🏌️ 150 YARDS → 3,500–4,000 YARDS
Fairway woods

THE "APPROACH CLUB" TEST

If you are playing the correct set of tees:

PAR 3s: You should hit a range of mid-to-short irons—not a wood or hybrid on all four.

PAR 4s: You should hit 7-iron or shorter into at least half of the par 4s. If you are reaching for 4-hybrids or 5-woods into most par 4 greens, the set of tees is probably too long.

PAR 5s: They should be comfortably reachable in three shots without requiring two perfect 3-woods back-to-back.

COURSE CONDITIONS MATTER, TOO

Total yardage isn't the only factor. Consider adjusting 200–400 yards shorter if:

• The course has high elevation changes, heavy/soft conditions, or thick Bermuda/cool-season rough.
• The Course Rating/Slope is unusually high relative to the length. For example, a tight, water-filled 6,200-yard course can play much harder than an open 6,600-yard course.

The goal isn't to play the longest tees you can handle. It's to choose a set of tees that gives you a challenging, enjoyable round while putting you in position to hit reasonable approach shots.

Use your average driver distance, the 28x Formula and the Approach Club Test to help determine which tees are right for your game.
